Helplessness and Despair

Reflections on Love, Grief, and Becoming a Caregiver

I am still trying to put some of the pain into words.
Years after my wife passed away, following her fifteen-year battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s, I find myself returning to what happened to her, to us, and to the life we thought we would have. Perhaps writing about it again is another small release, an incremental catharsis in the long, slow process of healing.
I think about it often because I now help families evaluate care options in México for their loved ones. And because I am facing another caregiving journey in my own near future. That prospect brings back the uncertainty of the beginning, even with everything I have learned since.
I hope that, in sharing my experiences and thoughts, I can help you feel that your own challenges, doubts, and grief deserve acknowledgment and understanding. If you recognize something of yourself in these words, I hope you also feel a little less alone.
